We have had a wonderful experience at Destination Smile with Dr. Fridgen. The facility is just perfect for kids and all the staff members are very friendly. This was our daughter’s 3rd visit. She has been going since she had first 2 teeth and now has almost entire set of milk teeth. She loves going there and this time she wanted to visit there very next day as well since she loves it there. It’s very clean, multiple stations so wait is never very long and the doctor and staff are very knowledgeable. Love it there and will highly recommend it.
March is National Nutrition Month, a perfect opportunity to look beyond brushing and flossing and focus on how food choices shape a healthier smile for your child. What kids eat every day has a direct impact on their teeth and gums, and small changes can make a big difference in their long-term oral health.
At Destination Smiles, we believe that healthy smiles start with smart habits at home — especially when it comes to nutrition.
What’s the Connection Between Diet & Dental Health?
The mouth is often the first place where the effects of diet show up. Foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates encourage bacteria that produce acids, which can weaken enamel and lead to cavities. Acidic drinks can speed up enamel erosion, while a lack of key nutrients may leave gums more vulnerable to irritation and infection.
A nutrient-rich diet, on the other hand, supports stronger enamel, healthier gums, and proper development of growing teeth.
Make Smart Nutrition Choices for a Healthier Smile
Parents play a big role in shaping eating habits. These best practices can help protect your child’s teeth:
- Cut back on sugary snacks and beverages, including juice, soda, and flavored waters.
- Make water the go-to drink, especially between meals and after sports.
- Serve tooth-friendly snacks like cheese, yogurt, nuts, fruits, and vegetables.
- Add calcium and vitamin-rich foods to meals to support strong teeth and bones.
- Limit constant grazing, which gives bacteria more opportunities to damage enamel.
Tips for Helping Your Child Stick With Healthy Choices
Knowing what’s best is one thing. Getting kids to follow through is another. Try these practical strategies:
- Lead by example by choosing healthier snacks yourself.
- Stock the kitchen with good options so nutritious choices are easy to grab.
- Involve your child in meal planning and grocery shopping to build interest and ownership.
- Set consistent snack and mealtimes instead of allowing all-day snacking.
- Explain the “why” in simple terms so kids understand how food affects their teeth.
Positive reinforcement and consistency can go a long way in building habits that last.
Why Dental Visits Still Matter
Even with a healthy diet, professional dental care is essential. Regular exams and cleanings allow your pediatric dentist to remove plaque, monitor tooth development, and catch concerns early. These visits also give parents a chance to ask questions and receive personalized advice tailored to their child’s needs.
Destination Smiles is committed to creating a comfortable, supportive environment where children feel confident about caring for their smiles.
During National Nutrition Month and beyond, focusing on nutrition is a powerful step toward a healthier smile for your child. When good dietary habits are paired with daily oral hygiene and routine dental visits, kids are set up for strong, confident smiles that grow with them.
